Pool Safety Tips for Homeowners

Safe Homes, Happy Families: Pool Safety Starts Here

As a real estate professional, I care about the safety of families in our community. If your home includes a pool or spa, it’s vital to take precautions such as fencing, covers, and constant supervision to keep children safe. Together, we can enjoy Arizona’s water features while ensuring a safe environment for all.

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month – Keep Your Family Safe

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month (DIAM) — a time to raise awareness and take action to prevent drowning, the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Arizona. Most drowning incidents happen in pools, hot tubs, and spas.

Secure Barrier

  • Surround your pool with a fence at least 4 feet high and self-latching gates.
  • Keep gates locked when the pool is not in use.

Constant Supervision

  • Never leave children unattended in or near the water.
  • Assign a “water watcher” during gatherings.

Pool Covers & Alarms

  • Use a safety cover to prevent accidental falls.
  • Install pool alarms for added security.

Maintain Your Pool Properly

  • Regularly check water quality, filters, ladders, and safety equipment.
  • Ensure all pool features are in good working condition.

Teach Water Safety Skills

  • Enroll children in swimming lessons.
  • Teach children to stay away from drains, suction fittings, and pool equipment.

Learn CPR & Emergency Response

  • Keep a phone nearby in case of an emergency.
  • Ensure you and caregivers know CPR to respond quickly.

Remove Temptations & Hazards

  • Keep toys and floats out of the pool area when not in use.
  • Maintain a clear, clutter-free deck to prevent slips and falls.

Install Interior Home Alarm Chimes

  • Set up alarms inside your home that sound when someone enters the pool area unexpectedly.
  • This provides an extra layer of safety and alerts caregivers immediately.
