Locally
known as the “Mountain Empire.” The community of Elgin makes up what is the
heart of Arizona’s Wine Country. The community is in south central Arizona,
about sixty-one miles south of Tucson off Arizona State Route 83. Elgin is an
unincorporated community, and a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Cruz County,
Arizona. The community is nestled in Sonoita Creek Valley at an elevation of 4,728
feet above sea level. The Elgin plain lies in the valley between the Santa Rita
Mountains to the west, Whetstone Mountains to the East, Huachuca Mountains to
the southeast, and the Patagonia Mountains in the southwest. 95% of residents who
live in the community of Elgin own their homes while 5% of the locals rent. The
median home age in the Elgin community is 28 years.
