COMMUNITY HISTORY

The history of Nogales can be traced back to 1539, when Fray Marcos de Niza, a Franciscan Missionary was dispatched by Spain in search of the legendary Cibola, the Seven Cities of Gold. In 1540 Spanish Conquistadors led by Francisco Vazquez de Coronado arrived in the area to expand expeditions. The prehistoric migratory route used by the ancient Indians was later named "El Camino Real" which is Spanish for "The King's Highway". Nogales takes its name from the Spanish word for "walnut" since groves of walnut trees at one time covered the mountain pass that bridged the two settlements. 
Nogales, Arizona is the gateway to the USA and sister city to Nogales, Sonora, MX. City of Nogales serves as both the economic capital and the county seat of Santa Cruz County, the smallest and southernmost of Arizona's counties. The city is mountainous and was established in 1880 by Jacob and Isaac Isaacson, who built a trading post along the border. Two years later, Nogales, AZ was the site of the first rail connection between Mexico and the United States.

Ambos Nogales

The sister-city area of Nogales, AZ, Arizona, and Nogales, AZ, Sonora, Mexico, is known collectively as Ambos (both) Nogales, AZ. This area was historically one city and was administratively divided by the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. Ambos Nogales, AZ share approximately 5 linear miles of international border, and is Arizona's largest international border town.

PARKS AND RECREATION

The city maintains over 10 public parks, a recreation center with basketball courts and a pool, three soccer fields, and a lap pool at the Wade Carpenter Middle School. Including, baseball fields at Little League Park, War Memorial Park, and Fleischer Park. While the county maintains the Manuel Tapia Trail, and La Concha Park. There is also multiple fitness centers, and a gymnastics & cheer facility.

Housing

Custom homes are predominantly built in Vista Del Cielo, Meadow Hills, and Mariposa Hills. While established neighborhoods such as Royal Road, Monte Carlo, and Valle Verde are always sought out for. Plus the downtown area offers historical residences and walking distance to most amenities.

The community has multiple supermarkets, big-box stores, Korean shops, post office and and package delivery services, restaurants, gas stations, hospital, community medical clinic, veterinary clinics, movie cinema, and various other small businesses.
